Rating:**

The Don franchise is back in all its stammering, self-praising and lopsided grinning glory. Living up to its prequel, this one is high on slick quotient and has many meticulously choreographed stunts. The only grouse: Don has become cockier than ever and loves rambling lines that narrate his characteristic traits in third person- 'Don ke dushmano ko…' Yawn.

We begin with a voiceover by the man himself who is now the A-PAC head of drug retailing and wholesaling and wants to spread his distribution channels across Europe. In doing so, he has to help his old enemy, Vardhaan (Boman Irani) escape from a prison in Kuala Lumpur. So Don stages his own arrest by surrendering at the KL Interpol office to the delightfully dumb investigators Roma (Priyanka Chopra) and her boss Malik (Om Puri). Soon, Don and Vardhaan have forgotten the incidents that occurred in the prequel and are plotting a major heist in icy Berlin.

Masand: 'Don 2' is spectacularly boring
Rating: 2/ 5
Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Om Puri and Boman Irani
Director: Farhan Akhtar

In his interviews leading up to the release of Don 2, director Farhan Akhtar has repeatedly said that viewers seeking anything other than pure thrills and entertainment from this film are likely to be disappointed. Going in with strictly those expectations, I'm sorry to report I still came away feeling cheated.

Rediff Rating: 2.5/5

Don 2 is a very impressively produced film but is let down by over-the-top acting, writes Raja Sen.

We've come a long way, baby. The first time we met Ethan Hunt in 1996's Mission Impossible, our local movie theatres were playing an Akshay Kumar[ Images] actioner in which he mud-wrestled with Rekha[ Images] and fought an Undertaker knock-off. Fifteen years on, Tom Cruise[ Images] comes to India[ Images] to promote Hunt's latest adventure, seven days after which we find Shah Rukh Khan[ Images] hanging upside down in a chamber with a pressure-controlled floor -- just like Hunt did in that first Brian De Palma film. And here's the cool thing: Farhan Akhtar[ Images] makes it just as slick.

Don 2, Akhtar's latest, is a glossy, unashamed action offering polished within an inch of itself, visually coming together seamlessly and effectively. The floors shine enough to reflect stampeding boots (which also shine), explosives obey their detonators, guns click into place with satisfyingly precise and appropriately amplified CLICKS, cars chase each other with murderous grace, and the bad guy -- when not wearing a pretty face -- is clad in white and reluctant to kneel because of the potential punishment to his trousers.

The ApunKaChoice movie review of Don 2. We all know that to catch Don is a mission impossible even for Ethan Hunt, but wait a minute, ten minutes into the film and we see a white-clad Don walking right in the police den and surrendering before the very girl he describes as his buri aadat (bad habit), his Junglee Billi -- now a cop -- who smirks at the hairy crimelord and shoves him into the slammer in Kuala Lumpur! Is that the end of Don? But wait another minute, unlike the sultry copper, we the audiences aren’t nitwits to be led astray by Don’s ruse. Something is cooking in his fertile head, and that’s a grand plan to befriend his imprisoned enemy Vardhaan and go robbing a bank in Berlin of its precious currency plates. This Don, you see, thinks big. Why steal money when you can print it right in your backyard! But...

Yours, I believe, says Shah Rukh Khan, carrying an inert Priyanka Chopra and handing her over to the new kid on the block, Sahil Shroff. The movie seems to have been made only to allow the actor to say and do all the things he ever wanted, be it a James Bond and Ethan Hunt rolled into one. What it does come across as finally is a Mission Impossible meets Abbas Mustan.

I have nothing against either except that it is instantaneously forgettable. This is the kind of film-making that urges you to watch and forget. The plot is easy, based mostly in Berlin only so the actors can wear lots of smart black overcoats, Gucci vests and leather boots. There are enough twists and turns that require the actors to drive cars at breakneck speed, jump from buildings, crawl into confined spaces, and look superlatively cool while doing so. Priyanka Chopra gets to keep her indecipherable New York meets Mumbai accent while playing an Interpol agent based out of Kuala Lumpur, Khan gets to play bad, and Boman Irani gets to clench his teeth in all manner of sinister ways that belie his teddy bear image.
